Around the time the USA invaded Grenada, a stand up comic in Hyde Park observed, ‘Grenada, one hundred thousand people, twenty thousand pigs, fifteen thousand chicken and THAT was a threat to your security? Well, I don’t think much of your security!’ He may have got the numbers wrong. I may be remembering wrong, but the point is clear.
Now, almost 40 years later, we have the heads of key missions to Sri Lanka begging for ‘vocal support’ for Ukraine. Here’s the news report:
Heads of key missions to Sri Lanka, including the members of the EU, US and Japan on Friday called on Sri Lanka to join them in ‘vocal support’ for Ukraine and international law, including the UN Charter and also urged Sri Lanka to join them in calling on Russia to end its hostilities immediately.
“We will work together with our friends and allies around the world to ensure that the sovereignty and independence of Ukraine is restored. We stand with Ukraine; and for freedom, democracy, and the sovereignty of nations around the world,” a joint statement stated.
The statement was issued by the head of the delegation of the European Union, high commissioners of Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the United Kingdom, and the ambassadors of France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Japan, Rumania, Switzerland and the United States.
The envoys condemned Russia’s invasion of Ukraine as an unprovoked, unjust and illegal attack on a peaceful, democratic and sovereign state.
“This outrageous attack is a gross violation of international law, including the UN charter.” The statement also charged Russia for dramatically escalating its attacks on civilian neighbourhoods and infrastructure, leading to large numbers of civilian casualties. Millions of ordinary civilians – mainly women, children and older persons – have been forced to flee from their homes into neighbouring countries as refugees, making it the fastest-growing refugee crisis in the last 70 years, it read further.
Lovely, ain’t it? I mean, for these global bullies with despicable histories of genocide and plunder, talking about sovereingty and independence, demands a WOW and HOW! They’ve added freedom and democracy. Wow, wow, WOW! When did such things start to matterfor them, really?
The Russian invasion, they describe as ‘unprovoked, unjust and illegal.’ Wow, wow, wow, wow, WOW! Do we NEED to give a list of all countries invaded and ravaged by these worthies or peoples subjugated and slaughtered by them or their ancestors (whose ‘good deeds’ they continue to benefit from) or invasions they’ve applauded or refused to condemn?
Civilian casualties. Really? Really, really?
But anyway, what is really, really funny is that these powerful nations have felt the need to ask Sri Lanka to back them. Sri Lanka? Isn’t this the country that these people love to badmouth and move resolutions against? More importantly, isn’t Sri Lanka the country whose economic ills are cited and demands made to go crawling to the Bretton Woods institutions? Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Japan, Rumania, Switzerland and the United States are asking poor, vilified, basket-case island-nation, ‘stand with us.’ If Sri Lanka does not, will these grand nations fall? Will Ukraine fall and Russia prevail if Sri Lanka stays mum? Is Sri Lanka THAT powerful?
Well, we’ve come to a strange place, have we not? The grandmastes of theft and murder are scouring the earth for support. One has to wonder if Zelensky was grossly overestimate the thug-worth of NATO.
